It was not until the death of Kurosaki Masaki that the boy began to strive in earnest to overcome that particular handicap, and effort in which he was wildly successful. Seven years later, Ichigo would return from Hueco Mundo, having successfully rescued Inoue Orihime from Aizen's fortress of Las Noches to discover his father waiting at the door with devestating news. His efforts as a substitute shinigami was undoing all the progress he had made, and was speeding the deterioratation of his human body. As a result, he was dying.

Prologue

Kurosaki Ichigo was only the slightest bit concerned when his human body started slowing down, becoming easily fatigued at even the slightest exertions, leaving him short of breath, exhausted, and aching all over. He first noticed the changes in his movements little more than a month after he first met Kuchiki Rukia, but never thought much of it, attributing the stiffness and fatigue to having to readjust after spending a time out of his body.

The first real sign Ichigo had of something being terribly wrong, was towards the end of his training with the Vaizards to control his Hollow. Upon re-entry of his body, Ichigo immediately found himself the victim of a heavy coughing fit, the end of which left him short of breath, and aching all over as his blood seemed to turn to sludge in his veins.

Ichigo had no time to dwell on this development as Inoue Orihime was kidnapped by Aizen, and Ichigo wasted no time in leading Sado Yasutora and Ishida Urryuu into Hueco Mundo, determined to rescue their friend. The orange haired teen would never realize that the Vaizards had been concerned by his coughing fit, and had taken those concerns to Urahara, who relayed those concerns and his own suspicions to Isshin, which drove the former Shinigami Captain to perform a thorough examination of his son's abandoned body, only to make a startling discovery. Ichigo would never realize until after his return that his many brushes with death up till now, had nothing to do with lack of strength or experience on his part, but was linked to his father's discovery.

In short, Ichigo's life would never be the same again...
